Mgahinga National Park, Uganda - For the Mountain Gorillas!

Mgahinga National Park is a nice little gem that you will enjoy - for the gorillas! Perhaps overshadowed by the bigger and hugely popular Bwindi Impenetrable National Park ... but Mgahinga has quite some advantages;

If you love mountaineering - for something within reach of altitudes between 2,227m to 4,127m , this is the place to be. I guess that is quite achievable! There are three extinct volcanoes that are part of the spectacular Virunga ranges that sit at the border region shared by Uganda, Rwanda and the DR Congo; Mt Gahinga (3474m), Mt Sabinyo (3669m) and Mt Muhavura (4127m). Take your pick!

Originally created to provide a safe haven for the endangered mountain gorillas, the park's dense forests are also home to the near extinct golden monkey. At 33.7 sq.km, Mgahinga National Park is Uganda's smallest park which therefore confines you to a pretty small area to cover.

That means you can quite easily visit the park on your way from Bwindi. A 2 to 3 days trip will do you great even with hiking Mt Muhavura at 4127m in mind - which would take about 10 hours to get to the top.

Mgahinga was made a national park in 1991 - an upgrade from a game sanctuary gazetted in 1930 by the British Colonial Administration. Over the last few years Mgahinga National Park has seen a surge in popularity - without doubt particularly for the gorillas ... but this park is stunningly beautiful!

The Batwa pygmies live in the areas surrounding the park. These have lived here for decades and attach particular cultural importance to the forest. Their way of life is hunting and gathering and have sufficiently lived off the forest for a long time. It is interesting to see how these natives live - that is one tour you will enjoy!

Mgahinga National Park has quite a variety of attractions ... simply bring plenty of time with you and be ready to do some trekking and I will tell you where to go ...
